Register for a Military Health Systems Examination

The National Counselor Examination (NCE) and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) are both used as a part of the recognition process established for practice in military health systems, including the Behavioral Health Service Line and TRICARE.

NBCC offers examination preparation guides for both the NCE and NCMHCE.

Behavioral Health Service Line

To register to take an NBCC examination for potential employment in the Behavioral Health Service Line, you will need to submit the Registration Form for the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for Professional Counselors Serving the Military Health Systems. Applicants through this option must be either an active National Certified Counselor (NCC) who is not the subject of an ethics review or under current disciplinary action or a licensed counselor in a state that does not use that examination for state licensure purposes. Passing the examination does not guarantee eligibility for a particular position. (Please direct employment qualification questions to the contact person listed in a particular job announcement).

Register

TRICARE

To register to take the NCE or the NCMHCE for potential practice under TRICARE as a certified mental health counselor (TCMHC), you will need to submit either the Registration Form for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) for Professional Counselors Serving the Military Health Systems or the Registration Form for the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for Professional Counselors Serving the Military Health Systems. Applicants through this option must be either an active National Certified Counselor (NCC) who is not the subject of an ethics review or under current disciplinary action or a licensed counselor in a state that does not use the NCE as one of the examinations for state licensure purposes.

For more information or qualification questions, contact your TRICARE regional contractor.
